Hello! Greatest weather cam by the way. Did you just mow, or did you mow and plant new trees? Also, how is the economy? Did the Loring Redevelopment Plan work for the locals? How much is heating oil a gallon now?

Hello Mr. Blanchard! Thank you for your compliments on the WeatherCam.
The area in view is a plum orchard that I began planting about three years ago. I just mowed it because it helps reduce habitat for mice which can cause a great deal of damage to trees over the winter (they tunnel beneath the snow and eat the bark on the trunks of the trees, which eventually kills the trees).
Our economy here remains fairly stable, as has the real estate market during the current crisis. Since Aroostook County's economic base is small and largely based on natural resources (potatoes and wood products), it is somewhat buffered from the major ups and downs of the national economy. With regard to real estate, our property values here never became over-inflated like they did in the rest of the country, so we are not really experiencing the real estate crisis.
The Loring Development Authority is still hard at work trying to redevelop Loring but it is difficult given our geography and distance to major populations. I am hopeful that eventually Loring will once again prosper, but I think it will require some patience.
As of October 6, the average cost for heating oil was $3.61 a gallon, but it has been decreasing rapidly over the last few days due to the economic crisis see ([maine.gov]).
Thank you again for your comments,
Fred.

really enjoying the countryside. hoping to see a bear, deer or moose.moose don't roam here in fl.planning a move to maine in spring. can't wait- snow and all!!!!!!!!
Fred Saturday, October 11, 2008 08:56 AM
Laurie and Butch,
Thank you for visiting my WeatherCam and I am glad to hear that you are enjoying the views. I have posted some photos of deer and moose at [www.monticelloweather.com/weathercam/photos/index.html], and I have some additional photos to post as well.
Most people here (me being one of them) don't mind the snow, it is the severe cold that is the worst part of winter. The coldest temperatures (30 to 40 below zero) occur when it is calm and still, and does not seem very harsh, but when it is 10 to 20 below zero and very windy it is extremely uncomfortable indeed!
I hope I have not discouraged you from moving to Maine because it is truly a great place to live!
Take care and good luck in your planning for your move to Maine!
Fred.
